The Dovetail Cove saga begins here—in July, 1971. Farrah’s on summer break and she’s sure to tell you she’s NOT twelve, she’s TWELVE-AND-A-HALF, thank you very much. The tiny island-town of Dovetail Cove is the only home she’s known. And tonight, she’s sneaking out to visit her Gran and show her a ‘mystery box’ she’s stumbled across at the Main Street Summer Market, dead certain there’s a story hidden within. And she’s right. Events reach back to 1956 and a shadowy ‘incident’ that started the darkness on the island. Only a handful know the true details of the incident. And even fewer have witnessed this new darkness, but Farrah will catch a glimpse of it tonight…at the edge of her Gran’s DEATHBED.

Deathbed Dovetail Cove 1971 Dovetail Cove Series Book 1 eBook Jason McIntyre

I grew up in Portland, Oregon and I admit, McIntyre's creation of Dovetail Cove is so real, I looked it up on the map. It isn't there. I knew it wasn't, but I had to double check.

This series of books is not linear. One may enter at any place, and read in any order, thanks to the sneakiness and deviousness of the author. The saga 'starts' here, but it really doesn't make a difference. Each novel/novella is a stand alone, and each takes place in a different year.

Farrah is a young girl growing up with her father. Her mother is on the mainland, and Farrah really doesn't understand why just that she's not home. Farrah's Gran is dying, and Farrah likes to find stories to bring Gran. She buys a 'mystery box' from a woman at the town market, and discovers a dark story for Gran—and herself.

These books are not bedtime stories for your young children, unless you feed them a steady diet of Twilight Zone re-runs. But they are marvelous stories, well written and great fun, in a dark sort of way.

Deathbed Dovetail Cove 1971 Dovetail Cove Series Book 1 eBook Jason McIntyre Reviews

I was recommended this author by a friend. I don't normally do horror but I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more!
This is a tale that is more than a mystery or a snapshot of fear or about the terrible things that humans can do...it is all these things, but with an underlying sense of sadness and coping with life's tragedies.

Farrah is faced with many battles and is on the cusp of moving on from childhood; she also loves stories, ones that lie in the hearts of everyone, so when she discovers a mystery box...

This is a well-written story, one that is thought-provoking and insightful. It's poignant and beautifully done.

Highly recommended.
Dovetail Cove - the place and the series - is a fantastic creation. The saga covers a number of years, with each book taking place in a specific year. The author has been releasing them out of order because he's devious. And, in fairness, these all work as stand-alone novels, so they can be read in any order.

Deathbed is where the saga begins. Farrah is one of my favorite characters in the series. (We meet her again in a later book.) She is feisty, smart, defiant, and full of life. All of the characters stand out and are memorable. They are unique, while also feeling familiar, like people we'd meet anywhere or might already know.

The Dovetail Cove setting is so real, I'd swear this place actually exists. Jason McIntyre has a cinematic writing style, showing us what he sees and putting us right in the midst of this fictional island town.

The plot, with this book and all the others in the series, takes us to unexpected places. Just when we think we know what comes next, a curve in the road sends us spinning down into the abyss. This is dark suspense at its finest, with glimmers of hope and humor to light our way.
Not what I expected but the writer kept me entrigued throughout the book. I enjoyed that it was a story inside of a story.
I loved this book! The juxtaposition of two stories, a story about someone telling a story, both totally compelling... it sucked me in immediately and I finished the book in two days. As soon as I can I'll be buying the next in this series. If you like a little sci-fi, a good dose of thriller, a morally questionable protagonist, and/or realistically portrayed family connections... you will definitely like this book.
I loved the story within a story approach. Not only are you getting a peek at the life of Farrah, but also a look at some of the people who once worked and lived in Dovetail Cove. And naturally these stories don't exactly end happily ever after. I just wish it were longer! And I suppose some more strangeness couldn't hurt either, but I'm guessing I may see more in the next books.
I love the world that McIntyre creates. It reminds me a lot of King's Castle Rock. There is this atmospheric creepiness that surrounds the entire book, and it really draws you in. You need to know what is going to happen. As soon as I finished, I started on the next in the series, Bled. <3
