It is 1829, and handsome, well-off Henry Cavell, recently returned to England having served in the army in India, sets up home on the seafront in the newly fashionable town of Worthing. He is in possession of a large diamond, given to him in India, which he vows he will give to the woman he loves – when he finds her, that is.

Jemima Brown, sixteen, good-hearted and hard-working, comes to work for him as a general maidservant. When Mr Cavell stands up for her against the unwanted attentions of some tradesmen working in his house, she sees at once that here is a man of high morals and integrity.

But it is Caroline Simpson, daughter of Henry’s house-painter, who catches his eye. She may be socially his inferior, but she is good-looking, flirtatious and knows how to use her charms. She manipulates Henry into marrying her, and only the loyal Jemima knows he’s been tricked.

How can Jemima fight her growing feelings for her master, maintain her morals and stay in Mr Cavell’s employment, despite her mistress’s increasingly erratic behaviour?

Henry Cavell, a wealthy gentleman, is caught between lust and love. He has a chance encounter with the lovely, but poor, Caroline Simpson. The two strike up a friendship, but it us soon clear that Caroline desires more than mere friendship from him. Caroline has been poor all her life and hates to work. Thus she is determined to ensnare a rich husband, no matter what the cost. So she sets her sights on seducing Henry Cavell. Distracted by her beauty, childlike innocence, and flirtatious nature, it isn't long before his lust for her takes over. Not long after, Caroline claims she is carrying his child. Henry, meanwhile, regretted his hasty actions, but he feels duty bound to marry the woman carrying his child. They marry and Henry is determined to love Caroline to the best of his ability.

A few months later, and Caroline claims she has lost the child. As time passes, it becomes clear to Henry that all Caroline cares about us money, fashion, and good society. She spends a good deal of time in London, while Henry remains in his home on the coast.

Away from his wife, Henry begins spending more and more time with Jemima, the quiet, gentle maid he has employed. Recognizing she has a kind heart, the two fall in love, but they do not act on their feelings.

When it becomes clear that Caroline has not been faithful to Henry, he seeks to dissolve the marriage so he can in turn marry Jemima. But laws of the time prevent then from divorcing. Will Henry and Jemima ever be together?

This book was excellent! The two women were perfectly portrayed, one representing lust and the other genuine love. Caroline was as horrible witch, a vilan you love to hate, and Jemima a heroine you are automatically drawn to. The writing style was very well done. I loved how the story was told from each character's point of view, and how when Jemima's point of view was being told, the author changed the writing style to better reflect the fact that Jemima was a poor servant and would not speak proper English.

Overall, an excellent read. A sweet, clean love story.

one of my new favorite authors.
This is a short little book, about a 2 - 3 hour read. It is also a simple book but enchanting in its simplicity. The author tells this story compactly and economically and does not clutter it up with the overblown prose and unnecessary dramatics that characterize so many romance authors today. There are no lords or ladies and thankfully no dukes! Henry and Jemima are of different social classes and they act that way. There is no farfetched story to cover why a poor girl acts and speaks like an aristocrat because she doesn't. No one's life is threatened, no one is kidnapped, and the main characters fall in love long before they fall in lust. The author's note at the end of the story is a sweet and poignant surprise.
The wife in this book was horrible and manipulating, yet in many ways was rewarded and elevated her lifestyle. This part of the book was difficult to swallow. The love story was beautiful and gave the book a positive and loving ending!
I found this story to be interesting but extremely frustrating. The reader gets to see the story from several points of view.

Our heroine goes to work for a gentleman who has just returned from India. The man is kind but indifferent -- not even bothering to find out her name. She is just a servant after all. But the hapless gentleman is taken in by a local hussy. She seduces him and tells him she is pregnant. He, being the honorable fellow he is, marries the wench and hopes for the best.

I tried to like the hero of this story but -- and apologies to the author for this is her family -- he came off as being ridiculously ignorant of some basic facts of life. How can a man not realize his supposedly pregnant wife is experiencing her monthly courses? He had lived out in the real world and wasn't some ignorant, wet behind the ears kid.

I realize divorce was almost impossible to attain at that time, but I felt he asked too much of the young heroine. I do wonder how the people of the town treated her in the following years. Pregnant and living as the man's wife. Everyone knew he was still legally married to another.

The story was interesting though a little dry. I really do hope their lives were filled with happiness.
I have given this 3 stars because there are times I found her characters missing lacking, or felt they were out of character for the time. Overall, I've enjoyed all her books so far, as I love historical novels.
A good story which reflected the historical ties with great accuracy. I did not realize until the end that it was based on real people and situations. Enjoyable!
I loved this story for the characters but I seldom read the last page as to how the author envisioned the storyline. In this case the author researched her ancestry and her characters and story were based on true relatives in her ancestry line. This made it so endearing to know that the characters and story were real. Hence I have read all her books and very much enjoyed each read. Looking forward to more delightful books.
